Hi! I am Dr. L. Blair Simmons, Ph.D. (she/her/hers)

I am a licensed psychological associate in Washington, D.C. (PSYA200001527).

As a Black and White Biracial woman, wife, and mother, my personal and professional identities inform my passion for supporting individuals, couples, and families with diverse and intersecting identities. Due to my training and experiences, I have a particular interest in working with Black, Biracial, or Bicultural individuals and interracial or intercultural couples. I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey; therefore, I work closely with clients to build a strong therapeutic relationship rooted in trust and respect.

My approach to therapy is grounded in authenticity, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity. I view my role as a supportive facilitator. I stand alongside my clients to help them create the changes they seek.

Together, I will help you to navigate challenges, discover your inner strengths, and achieve meaningful growth. By integrating multicultural and attachment-based perspectives, we will explore how your early childhood relationships, cultural and racial identities, and socio-cultural factors have shaped your worldview and experiences. This holistic lens allows me to provide you with personalized care that honors your unique background, challenges, and goals.

Specializations and Expertise

I received my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, where my academic and research focus included exploring resilience in Black families and the identity development of Black and White Biracial individuals. I have also completed advanced training in trauma-informed practices of psychotherapy including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) procedures. This foundation deeply informs my practice, particularly my work with adult trauma survivors.

I also have extensive experience treating anxiety disorders, depression, and challenges related to family dynamics, relationships, and racial identity. I am especially skilled at helping clients discuss and process experiences of racism and discrimination. My clinical expertise includes providing individual, couples, and group therapy to men and women in a range of settings, including universities, community mental health centers, and private practices.

My therapeutic style reflects my dedication to creating a safe, inclusive space for healing and growth. I collaborate with my clients to develop treatment plans tailored to their unique needs, goals, and readiness, ensuring a supportive and effective therapy experience.
